What is HYPEX?

HYPEX is an acronym for the HYPerspectral EXploitation Toolkit developed by Photon Research Associates (PRA). The HYPEX Toolkit is a collection of modeling and analysis software packaged with data analysis and visualization tools. This unique combination of tools provides modeling and analysis capabilities that go beyond that of traditional image processing systems.

Leveraging off PRA's experience modeling infrared phenomena for defense applications, the HYPEX Toolkit allows for on-the-fly atmospheric correction, reflectance calculations, and comparison of measured and modeled data. The HYPEX system is also easily coupled to standard image processing systems (ENVI, PCI, KHOROS) for further analysis and interpretation.

What are the uses of HYPEX?

Here are just a few ways the HYPEX Toolkit can be used:

Where can I get the HYPEX Toolkit?

The HYPEX Toolkit is currently under development. The anticipated release date for the software is the first quarter of 1997. A demonstration CD which embodies the capabilities which will be available in the final version of HYPEX can be obtained by contacting PRA at

hypexorder@photon.com.

What's on the Demo CD?

The Demo CD contains a hyperspectral image "viewer", five sample hyperspectral image data sets (AVIRIS), and model-generated spectra produced by the HYPEX spectral radiance simulation models. The model-predicted spectra represent the date, time, and sensor spectral calibration conditions appropriate for each sample image cube. The effects of differing "atmospheric states" used to predict the atmospheric radiative environment can be analyzed by interactively converting AVIRIS radiance to model-corrected reflectance via the "surface reflectance" plot options in the image viewer. The HYPEX Toolkit Demo CD executes interactive processes on SGI and SunOs systems. For more information refer to the HYPEX Demo CDROM.

A Prototype HYPEX Toolkit has been built which is currently being distributed to Beta sites for evaluation. The prototype contains the software models and tools required to:

The Prototype Toolkit executes interactive and batch/background processes via command line arguments, and X/Motif-based and/or SGI icon-based "desk-top" graphical user interfaces, on SGI systems only.

Want more information?

If you are interested in learning more about the Toolkit, several publications are available on this site to give you a preview of what will be included in the final product: the HYPEX Toolkit Help Guide, the HYPEX Toolkit User Reference Manual, and a Summary of HYPEX Executables.

We are always looking for interested people/organizations to become beta test sites for our product and provide valuable feedback. If you think you have an application or a program that would benefit from using the HYPEX Toolkit we would like to hear from you.
